Canadian Food Inspection Agency Scientists accused of attempting to sell a pathogen to China

Dr. Klaus Nielsen and Wei Ling Yu, former researchers with the Canadian Food inspection agency have been charged with attempting to sell 17 vials of live brucella bacteria to someone in China.

Brucella is a cattle disease that can be spread to humans via infected milk and meat. Canada's cattle and bison herds have been declared free of the disease since 1984.

Both scientists are quite familiar with the bacteria, as Dr. Nielsen was part of a team of scientists who came up with a 15 second test to detect the brucella, and coauthored a paper with Yu on the bacteria.

No word yet on whom exactly they might have been selling the bacteria to, or why.
